As we adopted Skye from the SPCA, very soon, we started suspecting Skye was deaf. Probably for the incredibly loud LOUD meowing. If anyone has ever heard a mountain lion cry, that's what Skye does, Its as if it’s a cry for help or attention or that we just don’t forget or leave him behind. There was also the occasions that we would arrive home and all our pets rush to great us and trust me its always one huge commotion yet Skye would just be sleeping through it all..Oblivious to the Garage door opening and closing the dogs Barking etc etc... Then there was the time I was calling him upstairs and he just wouldn’t look in my direction or knowledge my clapping or whistling sounds I was making and actually went the opposite way.. I then followed him and he was facing out of a window meowing Loud and I bent down to pick him up and startled him in a very big way, he jumped really having no idea i was right behind him calling.... Then we started to test him with foil behind the ears sounds and all other things we could try... & there it was the sad reality... I felt this sadness in my heart, It got to me so intensely , with the thought that never has he actually heard my voice or the I love you’s that i say to him and all the sweet words.. & Calls...I kept thinking how sad and lonely it must feel for him... But that didn’t last Long soon we realized after a while we actually have the coolest Mr Cat on the Block.. He is extra smart full of energy, and playful and soooo Loving, affectionate shows so much Emotion and Love and after all he seems to be a very happy little Kitty Cat. So we started learning after the Vet’s confirmation we actually found out its very common in white cats with blue eyes its cognitive they just born that way. So we started adapting to small changes that make a huge difference... Things Like sign Language, how to approach him without frightening him all the time, when its food time sleep time garden time etc etc... Skye Now is starting to come to hand signals. I kneel down and clap my hands when I want him to come in from the garden. “Skye” mainly stays in our back garden if we are around and doesn’t venture far, his little brother Levi conveniently lives right next door so that also helps allowing him to have some playdates and some “Kitty” fun without putting him at risk. We also trying a harness and lead, to train him on so we can take walks... not that that easy😳 He is fascinated with light beams and stares at the wall for long periods of time just waiting to see a beam of light reflected. Skye also has a very peculiar miaow and this becomes very high pitched when he is alone in a room.” Or when he doesn’t see the “doggies” Zoey & Zeus around... Prior to cuddling or a treat, I will flash the palm of my hand at him, in rapid succession, spreading the fingers wide. I chose that as it is a very strong visual signal and can’t be mistaken for anything else. Consistent reinforcement meant that after about a few weeks he is understanding what it implies, for example well done, nice stuff, and after a while he started to come when I called him using it.” I have been reading a-lot and researching about this Condition so We at home can make it better for Skye and us to cope..& we have Learnt that Although owning a deaf cat does present its own unique issues, cats are very adept at coping with the loss or partial loss of one of their senses, and even tho a few adjustments need to be made to accommodate them, This ‘disability’ does not diminish their ability to be a cat. So Next time you are out looking for a feline addition to your family, don’t Ignore those that are hard of hearing, these cats will give just as much love and pleasure as ones with full hearing, thats what we have happily discovered. He adores being patted and rubbed all over and he's a great purrer excessively loud with that too ) It's kind of funny -our other pets Zoey and Zeus are extremely affectionate with Skye since the beginning - they don't know what to make of his loudness tho ... But they play with him sleep all together and maybe its just me with my mommy vision I feel they protect Skye a lot, if he is out of the house on his own weirdly barking commences and only stops when we are around...and Skye is safe and protected 🤷🏻‍♀️ Because Skye does not like being alone at all, I figured out one thing - when I leave the room I make sure he sees I'm leaving. I discovered that if he knows I'm leaving, he'll still meow, but for a much shorter length of time, and not so Loud...not in such a panicky way. His a Funny boy - he still loves looking at his reflection! If it's not in the mirror, then it's in window glass. It’s such interesting behavior! He will stare for long periods of time, I always wonder what is he thinking...?! I know i might sound silly... but I had to share this peculiar story happening in our life that is our story with our Puurrrrfect Love Skye❤️ #kittylove #listningwiththeheart #mrcoolcat #unconditionallove #🐾🐾🐾🐾🐱🐶🐶
